This article explores the Prophetic guidance Uswah Hasanah as a foundational framework for curbing extremist behaviors in society. In the contemporary context of increasing intolerance, hate speech, and social polarization, the life of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ offers a comprehensive model for promoting peace, tolerance, and social harmony. The study begins by defining the concept of social extremism and identifying its root causes and manifestations in Muslim societies today.
Drawing upon Qur’anic injunctions and authentic traditions, the article analyzes nine prominent social behaviors that lead to extremism, including mockery, backbiting, intolerance, sectarianism, verbal abuse, and hate speech. The Prophetic response to each of these behaviors is highlighted to show how mercy, empathy, and mutual respect were central to his mission. Each section presents relevant Hadiths and practical examples from the Prophet’s life to illustrate his reformative and inclusive approach.
The article concludes by emphasizing the need for integrating Seerah education in curricula, training scholars in the Prophetic style of dialogue, and fostering a culture of compassion in families, mosques, and media. It offers practical recommendations for policy, education, and religious discourse, asserting that only through the revival of Prophetic ethics can the roots of social extremism be addressed effectively.
