Shab e Rafta: A Critical Analysis of the Edition Edited by Khawaja Muhammad Zakariya

Abstract

Shab e Rafta is considered one of the finest works of Majid Amjad, first published in 1958. Following the poet's death in 1974, no subsequent editions were released, which meant that the errors in the first edition persisted without any attempts at correction. Despite these shortcomings, the book remains a remarkable masterpiece of imagery and imagination, showcasing a versatile use of language. In a later edition, Khawaja Muhammad Zakariya undertook the task of editing the collection, which was published by Alhamd Publications in Lahore. This edition includes 67 poems and 15 ghazals, organized chronologically based on their date of composition. While Hanif Ramay had previously edited the work, it appears no substantial changes were made thereafter. Notably, there is no mention of variations in script or translations for the multilingual terms used in the poems. Moreover, Khawaja Zakariya did not specify how many editions were consulted during his editing process, or which edition served as the basis for the new version. A single incomplete reference is provided throughout the book. Nonetheless, Khawaja Zakariya deserves credit for presenting a fresh edition, utilizing modern printing techniques. However, the edition still requires further editing, including the addition of a comprehensive vocabulary section with translations and explanations to enhance understanding.
