Abstract

The efforts of the jurists and Hadith scholars in preserving, scrutinizing, and understanding Hadith can be realized from the fact that these services appeared in the form of various branches and classifications of the sciences of Hadith. Among the earlier scholars, AL-Hakim Al-Nashapuri mentioned 52 sciences of Hadith in the knowledge of Hadith, Ibn Al- Salah mentioned 65 in Muqadamah Ibn Al-Salah and Imam Jalal Al-Din Al-Suyuti mentioned 93 sciences of Hadith. The study and explanation of Hadith began during the era of companions (Sahaba) However, since they directly benefited from the messenger of Allah, there was no need at that time to formally organize this discipline. In the later period, the Hadith scholars felt the need to formally compile this discipline, and for this purpose they undertook countless efforts. Among these distinguished personalities is Allama Sheikh Badr-Ul-Din Ayni (passed away in 855 AH), who rendered various services in the field of Hadith. Among his writings, ‘Umdat Ul Qari particularly reveals his scholarly approaches. To this day, no finer commentary on Sahih Al Bukhari has been written than this. In this book, Allama Ayni has provided a complete explanation of Sahih Al-Bukhari. He first discusses the relevance of the Hadith to the Qur’an, then its connection with preceding Hadith, and afterwards he talks about the narrators, presenting their brief biographies. In addition to grammatical, he also discusses jurisprudential issues. By explanation the reason for the narration of Hadith, he also presents its historical background. In the case of conflicting Ahadith, he either adopts the principle which have been discussed in this article.
