Abstract

This research paper presents a comprehensive historical and critical analysis of the evolution of Western Orientalist studies on the Qur'an from the medieval era to the twenty-first century. It traces the shifts in Orientalist methodologies, beginning with the polemical and defensive apologetics of the medieval period marked by scholars like John of Damascus and Ricoldo of Montecroce and transitioning into the relatively balanced, linguistic endeavors of the Enlightenment era led by figures such as George Sale and Nicholas of Cusa. During the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, the introduction of source criticism and redaction criticism (by scholars including Abraham Geiger, Theodor Nöldeke, Richard Bell, Arthur Jeffery  John Wansbrough sought to frame the Qur'anic narrative, vocabulary  composition within Jewish, Syriac and Christian traditions. In the contemporary era, scholars like Gabriel Said Reynolds and projects such as Corpus Coranicum have shifted the focus toward intertextual approaches, examining the Qur'an’s unique literary discourse alongside late-antique theological traditions. Ultimately, the paper underscores the critical necessity for Muslim scholarship to objectively engage with and critically evaluate these modern Western analytical paradigms to effectively respond to Orientalist skepticism through robust intellectual and textual discourse.
