The Holy Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was sent as a mercy and source of blessings for all humanity. His teachings brought profound social transformation and significantly elevated the status of marginalized and vulnerable groups. Before the advent of Islam, weaker segments of society were subjected to various forms of oppression, discrimination, and social injustice. The teachings of the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) sought to eradicate these injustices and establish principles of dignity, equality, and social responsibility. Among the vulnerable groups of that time were widows, whose social and economic conditions were particularly difficult. Before the advent of Islam, widows in various societies faced severe social discrimination, deprivation, and exploitation. In some cultures, they were subjected to cruel practices, including self-immolation with their deceased husbands, while in others, they were deprived of the right to remarry and live an independent and dignified life. Islam, through the guidance and teachings of the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him), transformed this situation by recognizing the rights, dignity, and social status of widows and by providing principles for their protection, financial support, and honorable integration into society. This article examines the status and rights of widows in the light of the teachings and practices of the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him). It explores the social conditions of widows before Islam and analyzes the reforms introduced by Islam for their welfare, dignity, and empowerment. The discussion is supported by relevant and authentic references from primary and secondary sources. The study concludes with practical recommendations aimed at promoting the social, economic, and moral welfare of widows in contemporary society.
