This paper explores the reality of the objections raised by Orientalists regarding the Seerah (life and character) of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). The Orientalists have systematically directed their intellectual, verbal, and practical resources against everything related to Islam, focusing particularly on the life and character of the Prophet. Despite the fact that the non-Muslim world of Makkah acknowledged Prophet Muhammad as Al-Amin (the trustworthy), the same people who were plotting to extinguish his light, later attempted to cast aspersions on his character. The paper highlights the absurdity and injustice of these attacks, especially given that the Prophet's lineage was praised by those who were otherwise hostile to him. The objections raised by the Orientalists are also critically analyzed. For instance, historian Edward Gibbon, known for his Western perspective, strongly criticized the attempts to discredit the Prophet's lineage, calling such efforts an unfounded accusation that only elevated the Prophet's stature further. The paper discusses how various Orientalist scholars, especially during the medieval period, presented an inaccurate and distorted image of the Prophet, portraying him in an unflattering and sometimes malicious manner. These accusations included allegations of deception, promiscuity, violence, and piracy—claims that have been widely refuted by scholars and historians. The study also divides the Orientalist approach to the Seerah into two distinct periods: the first during the Middle Ages, where early scholars like John of Damascus and Dante portrayed Prophet Muhammad as a fraud, and the second in the modern era, where scholars such as William Muir, Montgomery Watt, and others continued to challenge the Prophet’s legitimacy as a divine messenger, offering interpretations that either questioned his prophetic experiences or presented him merely as a social reformer. This paper critically examines these perspectives and highlights the biases inherent in their approach, aiming to reveal the distortion of the Prophet’s image and the reality behind these objections. Through a comprehensive examination of these critiques, the paper offers a counter-narrative that defends the true character and mission of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), providing insight into how these Orientalist objections have been addressed and refuted by scholars over time.
