Studies on Isti‘ādhah and Basmalah in al-Tabyān fī Tafsīr Umm al-Qur’ān by Sheikh Abdul Salam al-Rustami

Abstract

This paper presents selected discussions on Isti‘ādhah (seeking refuge with Allah) and Basmalah (the phrase “In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Most Compassionate”) from the exegetical work al-Tabyān fī Tafsīr Umm al-Qur’ān by Sheikh Abdul Salam al-Rustami (1936–2014). The study highlights the author’s exegetical methodology, his reliance on transmitted reports (tafsīr bi’l-ma’thūr), and his focus on theological and juristic aspects relevant to contemporary Muslim practice. It explores the linguistic, legal, and spiritual dimensions of Isti‘ādhah and Basmalah, examining scholarly differences regarding their wording, ruling, position in recitation, and deeper meanings. The paper also sheds light on al-Rustami’s unique contribution to Qur’anic exegesis, particularly his emphasis on clarifying the stronger interpretations while avoiding excessive digressions. By presenting these excerpts, the research aims to underscore the continuing relevance of al-Rustami’s tafsīr, encourage critical academic engagement with his works, and recommend further study and translation of his writings for broader benefit.
