Abstract

Mathematics anxiety is widespread in Pakistani elementary classrooms due to exam-driven, procedural teaching, yet no context-specific solutions exist.  Prior research measures anxiety levels but does not explain its classroom development or offer frameworks designed for Pakistani schools. This study explored students' lived experiences of mathematics anxiety and developed the Affective-Constructivist Mathematics Model (ACMM) to reduce anxiety while promoting confidence and conceptual understanding. Using Constructivist Grounded Theory, data were collected from 36 elementary students and five teachers across five Pakistani schools through interviews, focus groups, classroom observations, and longitudinal case studies over sixteen weeks. Analysis revealed four emergent themes embodied anxiety, fear of public performance, negative mathematical identity, and strategic avoidance which converged into the Cycle of Mathematics Fear and Avoidance as the core category explaining how anxiety developed and persisted. The empirically derived model comprises four instructional stages (Launch, Explore, Discuss, Reflect) supported by an Affective Safety Core that promotes emotional security, error tolerance, and active participation. The ACMM provides a practical framework for teachers, curriculum developers, and policymakers to create supportive mathematics classrooms that interrupt anxiety cycles and strengthen student engagement.
